Ashtavakra Gita-15

Chapter 15, The Clear Space of Awareness, Knowledge of the Self,

Ashtavakra Gita

yathātathopadeśena kṛtārthaḥ sattvabuddhimān ājīvamapi jijñāsuḥ parastatra vimuhyati

II 15.1 II Ashtavakra: While a man of pure intelligence may achieve the goal by the most casual of instruction, another may seek knowledge all his life and still remain bewildered.

15.1 The man who is pure of heart Is bound to fulfill himself In whatever way he is taught. A worldly man seeks all his life, But is still bewildered.

15.1 A man of open intuition

may realize the Self upon

hearing a casual instruction,

while a man of cluttered intellect

inquires bewildered for a lifetime.

mokṣo viṣayavairasyaṁ bandho vaiṣayiko rasaḥ

etāvadeva vijñānaṁ yathecchasi tathā kuru

II 15.2 II Liberation is distaste for the objects of the senses. Bondage is love of the senses. This is knowledge. Now do as you please.

15.2 Detached from the senses, You are free. Attached, you are bound. When this is understood, You may live as you please.

15.2 Aversion to the world’s offerings is liberation.

Attraction to the world’s offerings

is the suffering of bondage.

This is the truth.

Now do as you please.

vāgmiprājñānamahodyogaṁ janaṁ mūkajaḍālasam karoti tattvabodho'yamatastyakto bubhukṣabhiḥ

II 15.3 II This awareness of the truth makes an eloquent, clever and energetic man dumb, stupid and lazy, so it is avoided by those whose aim is enjoyment.

15.3 When this is understood, The man who is bright and busy And full of fine words Falls silent. He does nothing. He is still. No wonder Those who wish to enjoy the world Shun this understanding!

15.3 This knowledge of Truth

turns an eloquent, wise and active man

mute, empty and inert.

Lovers of the world therefore shun it.

II 15.4 II You are not the body, nor is the body yours, nor are you the doer of actions or the reaper of their consequences. You are eternally pure consciousness the witness, in need of nothing - so live happily.

15.4 You are not your body. Your body is not you. You are not the doer. You are not the enjoyer. You are pure awareness, The witness of all things. You are without expectation, Free. Wherever you go, Be happy!

15.4 You are not the body.

You do not have a body.

You neither do nor enjoy.

You are Awareness only--the timeless Witness.

You are free.

Go in happiness.

 rāgadveṣau manodharmau na manaste kadācana

nirvikalpo'si bodhātmā nirvikāraḥ sukhaṁ cara

II 15.5 II Desire and anger are objects of the mind, but the mind is not yours, nor ever has been. You are choiceless, awareness itself and unchanging - so live happily.

15.5 Desire and aversion are of the mind. The mind is never yours. You are free of its turmoil. You are awareness itself, Never changing. Wherever you go, Be happy.

15.5 Attachment and aversion

are attributes of the mind.

You are not the mind.

You are Consciousness itself--

changeless, undivided, free.

Go in happiness.

sarvabhūteṣu cātmānaṁ sarvabhūtāni cātmani

vijñāya nirahaṁkāro nirmamastvaṁ sukhī Bhava

II 15.6 II Recognising oneself in all beings, and all beings in oneself, be happy, free from the sense of responsibility and free from preoccupation with "me".

15.6 For see! The Self is in all beings, And all beings are in the Self. Know you are free, Free of "I," Free of "mine." Be happy.

15.6 Realize Self in All and All in Self.

Be free of personal identity

and the sense of “mine.”

Be happy.

viśvaṁ sphurati yatredaṁ taraṁgā iva sāgare tattvameva na sandehaścinmūrte vijvaro Bhava

II 15.7 II Your nature is the consciousness, in which the whole world wells up, like waves in the sea. That is what you are, without any doubt, so be free of disturbance.

15.7 In you the worlds arise Like waves in the sea. It is true! You are awareness itself. So free yourself From the fever of the world.

15.7 You are That in which the universe appears

like waves appearing in the ocean.

You are Consciousness itself.

No need to worry.

śraddhasva tāta śraddhasva nātra mo'haṁ kuruṣva bhoḥ jñānasvarūpo bhagavānātmā tvaṁ prakṛteḥ paraḥ

II 15.8 II Have faith, my son, have faith. Don't let yourself be deluded in this, sir. You are yourself the Lord, whose very nature is knowledge, and are beyond natural causation.

15.8 Have faith, my Child, have faith. Do not be bewildered. For you are beyond all things, The heart of all knowing. You are the Self. You are God.

15.8 Have faith, my son, have faith.

You are Awareness alone,

the Self, the One.

You are the Lord of Nature.

guṇaiḥ saṁveṣṭito dehastiṣṭhatyāyāti yāti ca ātmā na gaṁtā nāgaṁtā kimenamanuśocasi

II 15.9 II The body invested with the senses stands still, and comes and goes. You yourself neither come nor go, so why bother about them?

15.9 The body is confined By its natural properties. It comes, It lingers awhile, It goes. But the Self neither comes nor goes. So why grieve for the body?

15.9 The body is made of worldly stuff.

It comes, it lingers, it goes.

The Self neither comes nor goes,

yet remains.

Why mourn the body?

dehastiṣṭhatu kalpāntaṁ gacchatvadyaiva vā punaḥ kva vṛddhiḥ kva ca vā hānistava cinmātrarūpiṇaḥ

II 15.10 II Let the body last to the end of the Age, or let it come to an end right now. What have you gained or lost, who consist of pure consciousness?

15.10 If the body lasted till the end of time, Or vanished today, What would you win or lose? You are pure awareness.

15.10 If the body lasts until the end of time

or perishes today—

is there gain or loss for you?

You who are Awareness?

II 15.11 II Let the world wave rise or subside according to its own nature in you, the great ocean. It is no gain or loss to you.

15.11 You are the endless sea In whom all the worlds like waves Naturally rise and fall. You have nothing to win, Nothing to lose.

15.11 Let the waves of the universe

rise and fall as they will.

You have nothing to gain or lose.

You are the ocean.

II 15.12 II My son, you consist of pure consciousness, and the world is not separate from you. So who is to accept or reject it, and how, and why?

15.12 Child, You are pure awareness, Nothing less. You and the world are one. So who are you to think You can hold on to it, Or let it go? How could you!

15.12 You are the substance of Consciousness.

The world is You.

Who is it that thinks

he can accept or reject it?

And where does he stand?

ekasminnavyaye śānte cidākāśe'male tvayi kuto janma kuto karma kuto'haṁkāra eva ca

II 15.13 II How can there be either birth, karma or responsibility in that one unchanging, peaceful, unblemished and infinite consciousness which is you?

15.13 You are the clear space of awareness, Pure and still, In whom there is no birth, No activity, No "I." You are one and the same. You cannot change or die.

15.13 In you who are One—

immaculate, still Awareness—

from where can birth, action

or a separate person arise?

yattvaṁ paśyasi tatraikastvameva pratibhāsase kiṁ pṛthak bhāsate svarṇāt kaṭakāṁgadanūpuram

II 15.14 II Whatever you see, it is you alone manifest in it. How could bracelets, armlets and anklets be different from the gold they are made of?

15.14 You are in whatever you see.  You alone. Just as bracelets and bangles And dancing anklets Are all of the same gold.

15.14 Whatever you perceive

is You and You alone.

How can bracelets, armlets and anklets

be other than the gold they are made of?

ayaṁ so'hamayaṁ nāhaṁ vibhāgamiti saṁtyaja sarvamātmeti niścitya niḥsaṅkalpaḥ sukhī Bhava

II 15.15 II Giving up such distinctions as "He is what I am", and "I am not that", recognise that "Everything is myself", and be without distinction and happy.

15.15 “I am not this." "I am He." Give up such distinctions. Know that everything is the Self. Rid yourself of all purpose. And be happy.

15.15 Leave behind such distinctions

as “I am He, the Self,”

and “I am not this.”

Consider everything Self.

Be desireless.

Be happy.

tavaivājñānato viśvaṁ tvamekaḥ paramārthataḥ tvatto'nyo nāsti saṁsārī nāsaṁsārī ca kaścana

II 15.16 II It is through your ignorance that all this exists. In reality you alone exist. Apart from you there is no one within or beyond samsara.

15.16 The world only arises from ignorance. You alone are real. There is no one, Not even God, Separate from yourself.

15.16 Your ignorance alone

creates the universe.

In reality One alone exists.

There is no person or god

other than You.

bhrāntimātramidaṁ viśvaṁ na kiṁciditi niścayī nirvāsanaḥ sphūrtimātro na kiṁcidiva śāmyati

II 15.17 II Knowing that all this is an illusion, one becomes free of desire, pure receptivity and at peace, as if nothing existed.

15.17You are pure awareness. The world is an illusion, Nothing more. When you understand this fully, Desire falls away. You find peace. For indeed! There is nothing.

15.17 One who knows for certain

that the universe is illusion,

a no-thing,

becomes desireless,

pure Awareness,

and finds peace in the existence of nothing.

II 15.18 II Only one thing has existed, exists and will exist in the ocean of being. You have no bondage or liberation. Live happily and fulfilled.

15.18 In the ocean of being There is only one. There was and there will be Only one. You are already fulfilled. How can you be bound or free? Wherever you go, Be happy.

15.18 In the ocean of existence

only One is, was, and ever will be.

You are neither bound nor free.

Live content and be happy.

mā saṅkalpavikalpābhyāṁ cittaṁ kṣobhaya cinmaya upaśāmya sukhaṁ tiṣṭha svātmanyānandavigrahe

II 15.19 II Being pure consciousness, do not disturb your mind with thoughts of for and against. Be at peace and remain happily in yourself, the essence of joy.

15.19 Never upset your mind With yes and no. Be quiet. You are awareness itself. Live in the happiness Of your own nature, Which is happiness itself.

15.19 Do not stir the mind

with “yes” or “no.”

You are pure Consciousness.

Be still,

and abide in the bliss of Self.

tyajaiva dhyānaṁ sarvatra mā kiṁcid hṛdi dhāraya ātmā tvaṁ mukta evāsi kiṁ vimṛśya kariṣyasi

II 15.20 II Give up meditation completely but don't let the mind hold on to anything. You are free by nature, so what will you achieve by forcing the mind?

15.20 What is the use of thinking? Once and for all, Give up meditation. Hold nothing in your mind. You are the Self, And you are free.

15.20 Give up completely

all contemplation.

Hold nothing in the mind or heart.

You are the Self, forever free.

Of what use is thinking to you?

Synopsis of Chapter-15

Despite his students' achievements and teaching, Ashtavakra is still unhappy and tells him more. Aversion of the world and worldly desire is the only way to liberate. When one gets attracted to worldly matters, he is grasped by desires. One who is grasped by those things can never escape their bondage and forever escape true liberation and happiness. Ashtavakra now points to self-emptiness.\
