Ashtavakra Gita
aṣṭāvakra uvāca
vihāya vairiṇaṁ kāmamarthaṁ cānarthasaṁkulam
dharmamapyetayorhetuṁ sarvatrādaraṁ kuru
II 10.1 II Ashtavakra: Abandoning desire,
the enemy, along with gain, itself so full of loss, and the good deeds which
are the cause of the other two - practice indifference to everything.
10.1 Striving and craving, For pleasure or
prosperity, These are your enemies, Springing up
to destroy you From the presumptions of virtue. Let them all go. Hold on to
nothing.
10.1 Give up desire,
which is the enemy.
Give up prosperity,
which is born of mischief and good
works.
Be indifferent.
અષ્ટાવક્રે કહ્યું: શત્રુરૂપ કામને, અનર્થથી ભરેલા અર્થને તેમ
જ એ બંનેના કારણરૂપ ધર્મને પણ ત્યજીદઈને બધેય અનાદર કર .૧
svapnendrajālavat paśya dināni trīṇi paṁca vā
mitrakṣetradhanāgāradāradāyādisaṁpadaḥ
II 10.2 II Look on such things as friends,
land, money, property, wife, and bequests as nothing but a dream or a
magician's show lasting three or five days.
10.2 Every good fortune, Wives, friends,
houses, lands, All these gifts and riches. . . They are a dream, A juggling
act, A traveling show! A few days, and they are gone.
10.2 Look upon
friends, lands, wealth, houses, wives,
gifts--
and all apparent good fortune--
as a passing show,
as a dream lasting three to five days.
મિત્ર, જમીન, ધન, ઘર, સી, સગાંસંબંધી, ઈત્યાદિ સંપત્તિ
સ્વપ્ન અને ઇન્દ્રજાલની (જાદુગરીની) જેમ માત્ર ત્રણ કે પાંચ
દિવસની જ છે એમ જો. ર
yatra yatra bhavettṛṣṇā saṁsāraṁ viddhi tatra vai prauḍhavairāgyamāśritya
vītatṛṣṇaḥ sukhī Bhava
II 10.3 II Wherever a desire occurs, see
samsara in it. Establishing yourself in firm dispassion, be free of passion and
happy.
10.3 Consider. Wherever there is desire,
There is the world. With resolute dispassion Free yourself from desire, And
find happiness.
10.3 Where there is desire, there is
the world.
Be firm in non-attachment.
Be free of desire.
Be happy
જ્યાં જયાં તૃષ્ણા છે ત્યાં સંસાર છે એમ સમજ. માટે
બળવાન વૈરાગ્યનો આશય લઈને તુષ્ણા રહિત બની સુખી થા. ૩
tṛṣṇāmātrātmako bandhastannāśo mokṣa ucyate bhavāsaṁsaktimātreṇa
prāptituṣṭirmuhurmuhuḥ
II 10.4 II The essential nature of bondage
is nothing other than desire, and its elimination is known as liberation. It is
simply by not being attached to changing things that the everlasting joy of
attainment is reached.
10.4 Desire binds you, Nothing else.
Destroy it, and you are free. Turn from the world. Fulfill yourself, And find
lasting happiness.
10.4 Bondage and desire are the same.
Destroy desire and be free.
Only by detaching from the world
does one joyfully realize Self.
બંધ તૃષ્ણા માત્ર સ્વરૂપનો છે, તેમ જ તે (તૃષ્ણા) નો
નાશ જ મોક્ષ કહેવાય છે. સંસાર પ્રત્યેઅનાસક્તિ માત્રથી જ
વારંવાર આત્માની પ્રાપ્તિઅને તૃપ્તિથાય છે. ૪
tvamekaścetanaḥ śuddho jaḍaṁ viśvamasattathā avidyāpi na kiṁcitsā kā bubhutsā tathāpi te
II 10.5 II You are one, conscious and pure,
while all this is just inert non- being. Ignorance itself is nothing, so what
need have you of desire to understand?
10.5 You are one. You are pure awareness. The
world is not real. It is cold and lifeless. Nor is ignorance real. So what can
you wish to know?
10.5 You are One—
Awareness itself.
The universe is neither aware
nor does it exist.
Even ignorance is unreal.
What is left to know?
તું એક, શુદ્ધ અને ચેતન છે, અને વિશ્વ જડ અને
અસત છે. જે અવિદ્યા કરીને કહેવાય છે તે પણ કાંઈ જ નથી,
તો પછી (કાંઈ પણ) બનવાની ઈચ્છા તને કેમ હોઈ શકે? પ
rājyaṁ sutāḥ kalatrāṇi śarīrāṇi sukhāni ca saṁsaktasyāpi
naṣṭāni tava janmani janmani
II 10.6 II Kingdoms, children, wives,
bodies, pleasures - these have all been lost to you, life after life, attached
to them though you were.
10.6 Life after life you indulged, In
different forms, Different pleasures, Sons and kingdoms and wives. Only to lose
them all. . .
10.6 Attached as you have been to
kingdoms, sons, wives, bodies,
pleasures—
life after life—
still they are now lost forever.
રાજ્ય, પુત્રો, પત્નીઓ, શરીરો અને સુખો તું આસક્ત
હતો છતાં પણ જન્મોજન્મમાં નાશ પામી ગયાં. ૬
alamarthena kāmena sukṛtenāpi karmaṇā
ebhyaḥ saṁsārakāntāre na viśrāntamabhūn manaḥ
II 10.7 II Enough of wealth, sensuality and
good deeds. In the forest of samsara the mind has never found satisfaction in
these.
10.7 Enough of the pursuit of pleasure, Enough
of wealth and righteous deeds! In the dark forest of the world, What peace of
mind can they bring you?
10.7 Prosperity, pleasure, pious
deeds…
Enough!
In the dreary forest of the world
the mind finds no rest.
અર્થ , કામ અને સુકૃત કર્મો પણ હવે બસ થયાં . આ
બધાથી (પણ) સંસારરૂપ વનમાં મન શાંત થયું નહિ. ૭
kṛtaṁ na kati janmāni kāyena manasā girā duḥkhamāyāsadaṁ karma tadadyāpyuparamyatām
II 10.8 II How many births have you not
done hard and painful labour with body, mind and speech. Now at last stop!
10.8 How you have toiled, Life after life,
Pressing into painful labor Your body and your mind and your words. It is time
to stop. Now!
10.8 For how many lifetimes
have you done hard and painful labor
with body, mind and speech?
It is time to stop.
કેટલાક જન્મોમાં તે શરીર , મન (અને) વાચા વડે પરિશ્રમ
આપવાવાળું અને દુ:ખપ્રદ કર્મ નથી કર્યું તો હવે તો શાંત થા! ૮
Synopsis
of Chapter-10
Ashtavakra further enlightens his student Janak in this
chapter. The guru says desire should be cast away from one’s mind no matter how
elevated or subtle the desire is. In this chapter of Ashtavakra Gita, he not
only tells us desire is the enemy, but prosperity is also which is born of
mischief or even good work as well. Be indifferent to all these things. Be
firm, free of desire, and happy.\
