Ashtavakra Gita-6

 


Chapter 6, Knowledge, The Higher Knowledge,                   પુનઃ ગુરૂપદેશપ્રકરણ

Ashtavakra Gita

ākāśavadananto'haṁ ghaṭavat prākṛtaṁ jagat iti jñānaṁ tathaitasya na tyāgo na graho layaḥ

II 6.1 II Janaka: I am infinite like space, and the natural world is like a jar. To know this is knowledge, and then there is neither renunciation, acceptance or cessation of it.

6.1 I am boundless space. The world is a clay pot. This is the truth. There is nothing to accept, Nothing to reject, Nothing to dissolve.

6.1 I am infinite space;

the universe is a jar.

This I know.

No need to renounce, accept or destroy.

અષ્ટાવક કહે છે: “અહં” (અર્થાત્ . “હું) આકાશની

જેમ અનંત છું, અને જગત ઘડાની જેમ પ્રકૃતિજન્ય છે,

(ખરું ) જ્ઞાન છે. તો પછી જગત આદિ)નો ત્યાગ પણ

નથી થઈ શકતો તેમ તેનું ગ્રહણ પણ નથી કરી શકાતું, કે તેનો

લય પણ નથી સંભવતો.

mahodadhirivāhaṁ sa prapaṁco vīcisa'nnibhaḥ iti jñānaṁ tathaitasya na tyāgo na graho layaḥ

 II 6.2 II I am like the ocean, and the multiplicity of objects is comparable to a wave. To know this is knowledge, and then there is neither renunciation, acceptance or cessation of it.

6.2 I am the ocean. All the worlds are like waves. This is the truth. Nothing to hold on to, Nothing to let go of, Nothing to dissolve.

6.2 I am a shoreless ocean;

the universe makes waves.

This I know.

No need to renounce, accept or destroy.

અહં” (અર્થાત્. “હું) મહાસાગર જેવો છું. અને

જગત -પ્રપંચ તરંગ જેવો છે, (ખરું) શાન છે. તો પછી

જગત આદિ)નો ત્યાગ ગ્રહણ કે લય સંભવતો નથી.

ahaṁ sa śuktisaṅkāśo rūpyavad viśvakalpanā iti jñānaṁ tathaitasya na tyāgo na graho layaḥ

II 6.3II I am like the mother of pearl, and the imagined world is like the silver. To know this is knowledge, and then there is neither renunciation, acceptance or cessation of it.

6.3 I am the mother-of-pearl. The world is a vein of silver, An illusion! This is the truth. Nothing to grasp, Nothing to spurn, Nothing to dissolve.

6.3 I am mother-of–pearl;

the universe is the illusion of silver.

This I know.

No need to renounce, accept or destroy.

અહં” (અર્થાત્ . “હું) છીપ સમાન છું અને

વિશ્વની કલ્પના રૂપા સમાન (વિવર્ત) છે, (ખરું) જ્ઞાન

છે. તો પછી (જગત આદિ) તો ત્યાગ , ગ્રહણ કે લય

સંભવતો નથી.

ahaṁ vā sarvabhūteṣu sarvabhūtānyatho mayi iti jñānaṁ tathaitasya na tyāgo na graho layaḥ

II 6.4II Alternatively, I am in all beings, and all beings are in me. To know this is knowledge, and then there is neither renunciation, acceptance or cessation of it.

6.4 I am in all beings.  All beings are in me. This is the whole truth. Nothing to embrace, Nothing to relinquish, Nothing to dissolve.

6.4 I am in all beings;

all beings are in me.

This I know.

No need to renounce, accept or destroy.

અહં” (અર્થાત્ . “હું) સર્વ ભૂતોમાં છે- અને સર્વ

ભૂતો મારામાં છે, (ખરું) જ્ઞાન છે. તો પછી જગત

આદિ જતો ત્યાગ, ગ્રહણ કે લય સંભવતો નથી.

Synopsis of Chapter-6

Janaka replies to Ashtavakra in the 6th chapter of Ashtavakra Gita because he knows what his guru is teaching him. He says he is infinite space, and the universe is a jar. This he truly knows and understands. In other words, there is no need to renounce, accept, or destroy anything. Furthermore, he gives some logic and says that renunciation, acceptance, and destruction are not necessary\

Chapter 5, Dissolving, Four Ways to Dissolution, લયોપદેશપ્રકરણ

Ashtavakra Gita

na te saṁgo'sti kenāpi kiṁ śuddhastyaktumicchasi saṁghātavilayaṁ kurvannevameva layaṁ vraja

II 5.1II Ashtavakra: You are not bound by anything. What does a pure person like you need to renounce? Putting the complex organism to rest, you can go to your rest.

5.1 You are pure. Nothing touches you. What is there to renounce? Let it all go, The body and the mind. Let yourself dissolve.

5.1 You are immaculate,

touched by nothing.

What is there to renounce?

The mind is complex—let it go.

Know the peace of dissolution.

અષ્ટાવક કહે છે: તારો કશાની સાથે પણ સંગ છે

નહિ . (આથી) તું શુદ્ધ હોઈ શાનો ત્યાગ કરવાની ઈચ્છા રાખે

છે? પ્રમાણે (દેહ -) સંધાતનો (અર્થાત્ દેહાભિમાનનો)

વિલય કરી સ્વરૂપમાં લીન થઈ જા.

udeti bhavato viśvaṁ vāridheriva budbudaḥ iti jñātvaikamātmānaṁ evameva layaṁ vraja

 II 5.2II All this arises out of you, like a bubble out of the sea. Knowing yourself like this to be but one, you can go to your rest.

5.2 Like bubbles in the sea,  All the worlds arise in you. Know you are the Self. Know you are one. Let yourself dissolve.

5.2 The universe arises from you

like foam from the sea.

Know yourself as One.

Enter the peace of dissolution.

સમુદ્રમાં જેમ પરપોટો ઉદય પામે છે તેમ તારામાંથી

વિશ્વ ઉદય પામે છે. પ્રમાણે આત્માને એકમાત્ર જાણીને

સ્વરૂપમાં લીન થઈ જા.  

pratyakṣamapyavastutvād viśvaṁ nāstyamale tvayi rajjusarpa iva vyaktaṁ evameva layaṁ vraja

II 5.3II In spite of being in front of your eyes, all this, being insubstantial, does not exist in you, spotless as you are. It is an appearance like the snake in a rope, so you can go to your rest.

5.3 You see the world. But like the snake in the rope, It is not really there. You are pure. Let yourself dissolve.

5.3 Like an imagined snake in a rope

the universe appears to exist

in the immaculate Self

but does not.

Seeing this you know: “There is nothing to dissolve.”

વ્યકત બનેલું વડ પ્રત્યક્ષહોવા છતાં પણ અવાસ્તવિક

અર્થાત્ (મિથ્યા) હોઈ નિર્મલ એવા તારામાં દોરડાંમાં દેખાતા

સર્પની જેમ છે નહિ . આથી તું સ્વરૂપમાં લીન થઈ જા.

samaduḥkhasukhaḥ pūrṇa āśānairāśyayoḥ samaḥ samajīvitamṛtyuḥ sannevameva layaṁ vraja

II 5.4II Equal in pain and in pleasure, equal in hope and in disappointment, equal in life and in death, and complete as you are, you can go to your rest.

5.4 You are one and the same, In joy and sorrow, Hope and despair, Life and death. You are already fulfilled. Let yourself dissolve.

5.4 You are perfect, changeless,

through misery and happiness,

hope and despair,

life and death.

This is the state of dissolution.

સુખ.- દુ:ખને સરખાં ગણી, પૂર્ણતા પ્રાપ્તકરી, આશા -

નિરાશાને સમાન લેખી , તેમ જીવન અને મરણને પણ

સરખાં ગણી, તું સ્વરૂપમાં લીન થઈ જા.

Synopsis of Chapter-5  

Now that Ashtavakra has accepted Janak's answer, he does not question his answer. Now, Ashtavakra in the fifth chapter of the Ashtavakra Gita introduces dissolution. By knowing yourself as the one you are, you will enter a state of dissolution. Regardless of your pain, despair, misery, or happiness, you are complete and changeless. This is the state of dissolution, and it is peace.\

Chapter 4, The True Seeker, Glorification of Self-Realization, શિષ્યાનુભવપ્રકરણ.

Janaka uvāca

hantātmajñānasya dhīrasya khelato bhogalīlayā na hi saṁsāravāhīkairmūḍhaiḥ saha samānatā

II 4.1 II Janaka: The wise person of self-knowledge, playing the game of worldly enjoyment, bears no resemblance whatever to samsara's bewildered beasts of burden.

4.1 The wise man knows the Self, And he plays the game of life. But the fool lives in the world Like a beast of burden. [On this see Shinn, The Game of Life.]

4.1 Surely one who knows Self,

though he plays the game of life,

differs greatly from the world’s

bewildered burdened beasts.

જનક બોલ્યા : , ભોગરૂપ લીલાથી કીડા કરતા અને .

આત્મજ્ઞાની એવા ધીર પુરુષની સાથે સંસારી એવા મૂઢ

મનુષ્યની સમાનતા કશી છે નહિ.

yat padaṁ prepsavo dīnāḥ śakrādyāḥ sarvadevatāḥ aho tatra sthito yogī na harṣamupagacchati

 II 4.2 II Truly the yogi feels no excitement even at being established in that state which all the Devas from Indra down yearn for disconsolately.

4.2 The true seeker feels no elation, Even in that exalted state Which Indra and all the gods Unhappily long for.

4.2 Truly the yogi feels no elation,

though he abides in the exalted state

yearned for by Indra and all the

discontented gods.

જે (આત્મ) પદની ઈચ્છા કરતા ઇન્દ્ર આદિ સર્વ

(તે પદની પ્રાપ્તિન થતાં) દીનતાને પ્રાપ્તકરે છે. (અર્થાત્

શોકાતુર બને છે), ત્યાં સ્થિર બનેલો યોગી હર્ષ પામતો નથી,

આશ્વર્યની વાત છે.

tajjñasya puṇyapāpābhyāṁ sparśo hyantarna jāyate na hyākāśasya dhūmena dṛśyamānāpi saṅgatiḥ

II 4.3 II He who has known That is untouched within by good deeds or bad, just as the sky is not touched by smoke, however much it may appear to be.

4.3 He understands the nature of things, His heart is not smudged By right or wrong, As the sky is not smudged by smoke.

4.3 Surely one who knows That

is not touched by virtue or vice,

just as space is not touched by smoke,

though it seems to be

(આત્મ)પદને જાણનારને અંતઃકરણમાં પુણ્ય અને

પાપનો સ્પર્શ લાગતો નથી. બહારથી દેખાતી હોવા છતાં પણ

આકાશને વાસ્તવિક રીતે ધુમાડા સાથે સંગતિ (સ્પર્શ) હોતી નથી.

ātmaivedaṁ jagatsarvaṁ jñātaṁ yena mahātmanā

yadṛcchayā vartamānaṁ taṁ niṣeddhuṁ kṣameta kaḥ

II 4.4 II Who can prevent the great-souled person who has known this whole world as himself from living as he pleases?

4.4 He is pure of heart, He knows the whole world is only the Self. So who can stop him From doing as he wishes?

4.4 Who can prevent the great soul,

who knows the universe as Self,

from living life as it comes?

સમસ્ત જગત આત્મરૂપ છે એમ જેણે જાણ્યું

છે તેવા મહાત્માને સહજ ક્રિયા કરતા અટકાવા કોણ સમર્થ

થાય? (અર્થાત્ તેની સહજ ક્રિયામાં વિધિ -નિષેધરૂપ બંધનો

કોણ આરોપિત કરી શકે ? કોઈજ.)

ābrahmastaṁbaparyante bhūtagrāme caturvidhe vijñasyaiva hi sāmarthyamicchānicchāvivarjane

II 4.5 II Of all four categories of beings, from Brahma down to the last clump of grass, only the man of knowledge is capable of eliminating desire and aversion.

4.5 Of the four kinds of being, From Brahma to a blade of grass, Only the wise man is strong enough To give up desire and aversion.

4.5 Of the four kinds of beings,

from Brahma to a blade of grass,

only the sage can renounce

aversion and desire.

બ્રહ્માથી માંડીને તુણ સુધીની (અંડજ , સ્વેદજ , જરાયુજ

અને ઉદ્ભિજ્જ) ચાર પ્રકારની જીવ -જાતિઓમાં માત્ર

જ્ઞાની ઈચ્છા અને અનિચ્છાને દૂર હઠાવવામાં સમર્થ છે.

ātmānamadvayaṁ kaścijjānāti jagadīśvaram yad vetti tatsa kurute na bhayaṁ tasya kutracit

II 4.6 II Rare is the man who knows himself as the undivided Lord of the world, and he who knows this is not afraid of anything.

4.6 How rare he is! Knowing he is the Self, He acts accordingly And is never fearful. For he knows he is the Self, One without two, The Lord of all creation

4.6 Rare is he who knows himself

as One with no other—

the Lord of the Universe.

He acts as he knows

and is never afraid.

કોઈક (પોતાના) આત્માને અને જગતના ઈશ્વરને

અદ્વૈત (એકરૂપ) જાણે છે. તે જે જાણે છે તેને આચરણ

માં મૂકે છે. તેને કશેથી પણ ભય આવતો નથી .

 

Synopsis of Chapter-4

In chapter 4 of the Ashtavakra Gita, Janak answers Ashtavakra's questions. Janaka says that the supreme entity of the universe can do as it pleases and live the life that pleases it.\
